Singapore decides to “live with the virus”
In this September 9, 2021 article for Bloomberg, Chanyaporn Chanjaroen reports that Singapore will shift the focus of its daily reports in accordance with the government’s plan to live with the virus.
According to the Ministry of Health, its COVID reporting will only focus on serious cases, as well as information on large emerging clusters. It will no longer state the number of linked and unlinked cases as “this is no longer relevant as before”.
Singapore’s vaccination rate is one of the highest in the world at 81%, but the number of mild and asymptomatic cases are on the rise [also read 75% of new COVID cases in Singapore are vaccinated].
Editor’s Note: This article highlights the importance of data gathering and case reporting. Singapore’s plan to report only the serious cases and infection clusters was made to inform the public. They continue to gather data on COVID cases, but they have deemed it is no longer significant to continue announcing increasing cases.
Meanwhile, the CDC only monitors breakthrough cases (fully vaccinated who contract COVID) that required hospitalization or have died. Which meant that they have no idea how many fully vaccinated people have actually contracted COVID-19, and hence, they have no basis for saying that this is becoming a “pandemic of the unvaccinated” [see a rebuttal from Dr. Byram Bridle, read Dr. Byram Bridle: There is no pandemic of the unvaccinated. Also read ‘Pandemic of the Unvaxxed’ is a False Narrative].
The context for Singapore’s change in reporting is logical. If governments want people to live with the virus, they must strive to create an environment of trust. This requires doing the best they can to ensure that citizens’ needs are addressed (this includes the need for working hospital systems) while at the same time doing due diligence (for example, changing hospital systems based on emerging evidence, allocating budget for health services so citizens who are unable to pay can access their medical requirements, among others).
While Singapore has started its move away from the “pandemic” year, the Philippines continues to rehash all its mistakes. Already, our government is reimposing lockdowns despite the fact one year of lockdowns has not stopped cases from increasing [read Stanford’s Dr. John Ioannidis destroys the Covid lockdown narrative]. Our hospital workers are now at a breaking point as hospitals are once again, overwhelmed, and our healthcare workers experience delays in the release of their salaries and benefits.1https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/philippines-health-workers-protest-neglect-covid-19-strains-hospitals-2021-09-01/ People are hungry and angry as allegations of widespread corruption during the pandemic is challenging the President and his men.2https://morningstaronline.co.uk/article/f/covid-19-and-corruption-in-the-philippines
As our neighboring countries start their move towards normality, our country is as confused as ever. We blame it on the government’s lack of capacity to use data for its decision-making.
If there is anything we can learn from the controversial video of Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque3https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mhMdptc2z8 and Dr. Maricar Limpin4https://twitter.com/inquirerdotnet/status/1436166926586179588?s=28 it is this: no one benefits from the Philippine government’s lockdown policy. The lack of strategy in the “pandemic” policies has pushed people over the edge, but there is no hope of respite. Even after a year of this “pandemic”, the government continues to use guesswork in its decisions, and hence, the hope for “going back to normal” remains a far-fetched reality. The government thinks that having a high vaccination rate is the only way to go back to normal. Hence, our leaders are willing to violate our freedoms, sacrifice our children’s mental, emotional, and psychological wellbeing, and our country’s economy for this.
We wonder, with the kind of mindset they have right now, how would they deal with the expected surge in cases once the Philippines hits a high vaccination rate? We have already predicted this outcome a year ago COVID-19 PANDEMIC: THE PHILIPPINE EXPERIENCE. We don’t want to say, “we told you so”, but with the way things are going now, it needs to be said. We told you this was going to happen. Now that it has happened, we are telling you, if this nonsense continues, there will be no country or society to pass on to our children.
