In this May 3, 2022 article for Vice, Joseph Cox reveals that the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has bought access to location data from tens of millions of phones in the US to determine compliance with curfews, track patterns of people visiting schools, and specifically to monitor the effectiveness of policy among the Navajo Nation.

The data came from SafeGraph, a company banned by Google from the Play Store in June 2021.

According to the documents obtained by Motherboard, the CDC intends to use the data to “support non-COVID-19 programmatic areas and public health priorities across the agency, including but not limited to travel to parks and green spaces, physical activity and mode of travel, and population migration before, during, and after natural disasters”.

Zach Edwards, a cybersecurity researcher, comments, “In my opinion, the SafeGraph data is way beyond any safe thresholds [around anonymity]”.

We see in this article an attempt to legitimize and normalize surveillance. Just consider how this article from Vice has been “smartly” written.

First, it presented the facts of the CDC’s acquisition of location data which was obtained from unsuspecting mobile phone users.

Second, it recognized the reality that this move has validated the issues being raised by “conservatives and anti-vaccine groups” surrounding government surveillance of its citizens.

Lastly, it goes on to defend the CDC’s decision to purchase location data, quoting CDC which said, “CDC has an interest in continued access to this mobility data as the country opens back up. This data is used by several teams/groups in the response and have been resulting in deeper insights into the pandemic as it pertains to human behavior”.

This article is another clear indication of the kind of future they are programming people for. They are setting up the foundation for a world where there is no freedom, and where they know our every move. Today, this “claim” sounds hilarious to people who have no idea of the real power of our current technologies. But as they say, truth is stranger than fiction. Now that governments have discovered they can suspend our rights in the guise of a pandemic, do we think that they will refrain from fabricating another pandemic?
