Philippine National ID System Faces Delays, Data Privacy Concerns

Philippine National ID System Faces Delays, Data Privacy Concerns

The Philippine National ID project, established to expedite identification processes, has had severe delays and complications. The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) terminated its contract with AllCard Inc. because the provider failed to supply the expected amount of IDs, producing just half of the required 116 million cards. Despite assurances, many receivers found the paper IDs ineffective since banks frequently rejected them. AllCard blames its failure on technical and personnel concerns, while the BSP and the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) are also being investigated for their roles in the delays. Lawmakers are calling for probes to hold those responsible accountable.

Editor’s Note: Beyond the delays and frustrations with National ID, there is a more serious concern: How can we be sure that AllCard, Inc. no longer has access to the vast amounts of sensitive personal data they’ve handled? Given that data passed through their system, the risk of unauthorized access or even potential leaks remains real, especially in an era of frequent data breaches. This situation in the Philippines is reflective of a broader global push toward digital IDs, which many countries are rapidly adopting. The Philippines is jumping into the national ID initiative without the necessary infrastructure or safeguards in place.

Digital IDs also come with heightened risks of privacy violations, data security issues, and identity theft. It raises the question of whether the rush to adopt digital IDs is truly in the best interest of the Filipino people or merely a superficial attempt to align with global standards without addressing critical risks.
