Jailbreak from Climate Change: Can Decarceration Protect Alaska’s Prisons?

admin, August 16, 2024August 16, 2024

In Alaska, advocates emphasize the need to reduce the prison population as a crucial response to the climate crisis, highlighting the vulnerability of aging correctional facilities to extreme weather events such as floods and thawing permafrost. The Fifth National Climate Assessment warns that climate-related damage poses significant threats to state infrastructure, with projections indicating over $93 million in damages to the Department of Corrections’ facilities due to glacial melting. Instead of investing in maintaining these outdated structures, advocates argue for decarceration to enhance community resilience and reduce the risks associated with housing large numbers of individuals in hazardous environments. The erratic weather patterns, including unprecedented rainfall and extreme droughts, further exacerbate the instability of these facilities, prompting calls for a reevaluation of the state’s approach to incarceration in the face of climate change.

Editor’s Note: When people make these proposals, do they consider the societal implications? Do people realize that climate change is not the reason that people commit crimes? If they want to reduce the prison population, perhaps the first step is to address the root cause of crime!

We can think of several possible consequences of this proposal. First, releasing inmates without adequate support or rehabilitation programs might increase recidivism rates, putting a strain on communities rather than helping them. There’s also a risk that the focus on decarceration could overshadow the need for comprehensive criminal justice reform, leaving systemic issues unaddressed. Finally, if not carefully managed, the transition could create a chaotic environment within the remaining facilities, potentially compromising safety for both staff and inmates.
