In a February 7, 2022 article published in Forbes, Mason Bissada reported that British researchers have discovered a new HIV variant^[1]https://www.unaids.org/en/resources/presscentre/pressreleaseandstatementarchive/2022/february/20220207_hiv-variant that doubles the rate of immune system decline in infected people and can cause AIDS to set in two to three times faster than other strains of the virus.

According to the report, the research^[2]https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.abk1688, led by scientists from the University of Oxford’s Big Data Institute, found people living with the newly discovered variant—named subtype-B—have higher HIV viral loads than those living with other variants. The variant was identified in the Netherlands, where researchers believe it has circulated for years.

Also, the report cited that Moderna^[3]https://investors.modernatx.com/news/news-details/2022/IAVI-and-Moderna-Launch-Trial-of-HIV-Vaccine-Antigens-Delivered-Through-mRNA-Technology/default.aspx announced in January 2022 that it had begun phase 1 of clinical trials for its HIV vaccine, implementing the same mRNA technology used to create its coronavirus vaccine.

Moreover, on January 4, 2022, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported people with HIV in New York—the state with the highest per-capita rate of HIV—were less likely to be vaccinated against Covid-19 than the general population.  The report also adds that some researchers have speculated that the coronavirus can mutate numerous times in the systems of HIV-positive people due to their compromised immunity, potentially causing novel variants like omicron^[4]https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=4014499.

Are we to believe naively that this is merely a coincidence with the announcement that Moderna is already on its Phase 1 of development for an mRNA HIV vaccine?  Are they conditioning societies once again so that an easy authorization for emergency use of their doses could be released?

For those who are not aware, in October 2020, a group of researchers warned that some coronavirus vaccine candidates under development could increase susceptibility to HIV.
