In this October 10, 2021 feature for Full Measure, investigative journalist Sharyl Attkisson interviews several members of the Amish community in Pennsylvania.

Attkisson wants to know: how did the Amish community deal with COVID-19? Calvin Lapp, an Amish Mennonite says that the first time they got back to church after a short lockdown last year, every body got coronavirus. He says that they were not denying the coronavirus, they are, instead, facing it head on. He adds, “to shut down and say that we can’t go to church, we can’t get together with family, we can’t see our old people in the hospital, we got to quit working? It’s going completely against everything that we believe. You’re changing our culture completely to try to act like they wanted us to act the last year, and we’re not going to do it.”

Attkisson reports that as of last March 2021, health experts have declared that the Amish community in Lancaster, Pennsylvania has reached herd immunity.¹This has been reported by mainstream news networks. Editor’s Note: If COVID was truly a health crisis, governments would already be hard at work trying to figure out how the Amish was able to keep their communities functioning in spite of the virus. Governments would already be trying to emulate the Amish’s decisions, and maybe, we would all be back to living our lives.

Could the Amish experience be the concrete example of this? If our governments truly cared, then they would try to find the answer for us.
