Trudeau ends use of Emergencies Act: Why?

In this February 23, 2022 article, CBC’s Nick Boisvert reports that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has revoked the use of the Emergencies Act saying, “the situation is no longer an emergency”.

In a press briefing, Trudeau explains the decision to invoke the act. He said, “As the weeks went by, it became obvious that provincial and local authorities needed more tools in order to enforce the law and protect Canadians. And that’s exactly what the Emergencies Act provided…It was the responsible and necessary thing to do”.

Under the Emergencies Act, the government was able to freeze the bank accounts and credit cards of protesters, and attending the events at Ottawa was deemed illegal. Police officers from outside Ottawa were also able to participate in the operation to end the convoy protest.

Trudeau says that the decision to revoke the act was made after consulting with police services across Canada which confirmed that they can deal with further disruptions under normal laws.

According to the report, a parliamentary inquiry into the government and police actions will begin in 60 days.

Despite the revocation of the Emergencies Act, Alberta Premier Jason Kenney confirms that the court challenge against the government’s use of the Emergencies Act will push through [to learn about this lawsuit, read Alberta Premier will file legal challenge to end Trudueau’s Emergencies Act].

Editor’s Note: Why did Trudeau revoke the Emergencies Act when the Canadian House of Commons just voted to extend it? We must remember that when the Canadian parliament placed the Emergencies Act to vote, the streets of Ottawa have already been cleared and some of the protesters have already been jailed. Moreover, Trudeau went public last February 22, 2022, saying that the Emergencies Act will remain in place even when the blockades are gone.1https://www.rt.com/news/550169-trudeau-emergencies-act-stays-protest/ What changed since then?

Well, Trudeau wants you to believe again that he respects democracy. He promised the Emergencies Act would end once the emergency ended, and he is only doing what he promised he would do. But is that the whole truth? If Trudeau is an enemy of freedom, why would he revoke the Emergencies Act which would have given him unprecedented powers to crush the “resistance”?

Well, for one, the crackdown on the protesters in Ottawa led to even more citizens in neighboring provinces rising up against Trudeau.2https://nationalfile.com/massive-protests-spread-across-canada-following-ottawa-crackdown/ and https://redstate.com/nick-arama/2022/02/20/crackdown-sparks-even-more-massive-protests-across-canada-crisis-for-trudeau-n525046 If Trudeau keeps the Emergency Act in place despite having no real emergency, will his government be able to survive the backlash?

Also, non-compliance among the mild-mannered Canadians is increasing as the government becomes more abusive. Consider this: just a day after the Emergencies Act was invoked and the freezing of personal accounts of those who helped finance the Freedom Convoy were announced, top banks in Canada were reported to have experienced major outages. Some sources speculate that a bank run was happening in Canada after the #TruckersForFreedom called for people to take out their cash as a form of non-compliance against the federal government’s overreach.3https://fee.org/articles/did-justin-trudeau-s-financial-crackdown-really-spark-a-bank-run-in-canada/

Videos during the Ottawa crackdown and the day following continue to circulate on social media. The brutality and the lack of humanity exercised by the police during this period have sparked global criticism of how Trudeau managed this “public disturbance”. If he forces his hand by insisting on keeping the Emergencies Act in place despite having no real emergency, Trudeau will only confirm that he is a dictator whose main priority is to keep his reputation intact.

So make no mistake Trudeau’s decision to revoke the Emergencies Act is not the act of an “honorable” man [also read Canadian experience shows glimpse of totalitarian future we can expect if citizens do not pushback].

It is an attempt at salvaging his reputation and keeping his power over members of the parliament who are also starting to question his agenda.
