Pandemic Fund Prioritizes Profits Over Chronic Health Needs
The U.S. and other nations have committed nearly $1 billion to the World Bank’s Pandemic Fund, which aims to strengthen global pandemic preparedness. Critics argue that the fund primarily benefits private interests like the Gates Foundation and Big Pharma by prioritizing vaccine development and expanding surveillance, especially in developing countries. The fund’s strategic plan includes building global digital health infrastructure and promoting the “One Health” approach, which some see as a means of exerting greater control. Concerns have been raised that this funding focuses more on profit-driven agendas than on addressing actual public health needs.
Editor’s Note: Rather than putting billions of dollars into theoretical pandemic possibilities, why not focus on tackling chronic illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer, which currently kill millions? This is where the demand exists, particularly in marginalized regions where access to treatment and prevention is severely limited.
Unfortunately, Big Pharma is more interested in the next catastrophe that will drive profits than in addressing pressing health issues that do not yield the same financial returns. Surveillance and control in the name of “preparedness” run the risk of becoming an exploitative weapon rather than a protective one.
