Philippines Pilots Integration of National ID, E-Wallets: Are We On The Road To Central Bank Digital Currencies?

The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) have partnered with GCash to pilot the National ID eVerify platform to enhance financial inclusion and streamline identity verification processes. This initiative will enable government agencies and private sector entities to securely authenticate customer identities, facilitating a faster and more efficient know-your-customer (KYC) process for financial institutions like GCash.

By reducing the need for extensive physical documentation, the platform seeks to minimize fraud and improve user experience, ultimately contributing to the Philippine government’s digitalization agenda. Officials emphasize that this collaboration represents a significant step towards providing accessible services to Filipinos while ensuring the legitimacy of civil registry documents.

Editor’s Note: For those who don’t know, this initiative may seem like a simple collaboration between institutions, but we know better. Why would the Philippine government choose a financial institution to verify identity if it does not intend to integrate the National ID system and e-wallets? Clearly, this is the first step towards Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDCs)!
