A new Digital ID system called Maisha Digital Card will be launched in Kenya, and it will include the use of facial and fingerprint recognition for personal identification. The digital ID will also be integrated with the Unique Personal Identifier (UPI) which will be issued at birth. the UPI will be a lifelong identification number for each Kenyan.

The move is supported by religious leaders, saying that it will make it easier for citizens to access government services.

Editor’s Note: The Philippines has already launched a Learner Reference Number (LRN) for all students entering elementary schools. This is a lifelong number that students will use as long as they are a part of the formal educational system. Then there is the Social Security Number which is a requirement for all employees in the formal economic system. With the launch of our very own Digital ID system (currently not a requirement for everyone), it will only be a matter of time before our “dear” leaders start thinking of creating a Birth Control Number that will be like the UPI, and will be linked to all the other IDs we have. Once that is done, then you can imagine how robust the government’s capacity for surveillance will be. They will know everything about you, and they will have the capacity to create your profile, which can be used for any purpose they can think of.

Facebook can manipulate its algorithm to prompt you to buy products you had no intention of buying. It can trap you in an echo chamber without knowing it. The data it has of you has only been collected online, via trackers, and can only tell Facebook what your interests are. Now imagine how much more powerful controllers of governments can become once they have access to both your social media data and your personal information. If you haven’t realized it already, this is the very reason why you need to protect your digital data.
