In this March 23, 2023 article for Spiked, Norman Lewis says that freedom of speech on the internet has died with the European Union signing the Digital Services Act (DSA). Under the DSA, very large online platforms (VLOPs) such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram will be required to remove illegal content determined by governments. VLOPs are already implementing these new regulations while smaller platforms have until 2024 to comply to this directive.

According to Lewis, this move from the EU will normalize content regulation and it will have a drastic impact not only in Europe but around the world. He likens the DSA to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which became a global standard and has placed the EU a step closer to achieving its goal to become a global regulatory superpower.
