The following article was written by Pepe Escobar, a Brazilian journalist, and geopolitical analyst. It was published by The Cradle last October 10, 2022.

In it, Escobar summarizes the events leading to the bombing of the Crimea Bridge and its implications. Escobar also discusses what he calls as the “Act of War trifecta” – the three events that pushed Moscow to unleash its first wave of “Shock’n Awe”.

Escobar also explains that Russia’s recent attacks are now a Counter-Terrorist Operation (CTO), as well as describes the various changes in strategy that will now be employed in Moscow. He says that the CTO will come in three stages:

1. Overload of the Ukrainian air defense system
2. Plunging Ukraine into the Dark Ages (as Russian strikes are targetting critical energy infrastructures)
3. Destruction of all major military installations.

Escobar ends his article with the following words: “Moscow has shown admirable restraint for too long. No one should ever forget that in the real Great Game – how to coordinate the emergence of the multipolar world – Ukraine is just a mere sideshow. But now the sideshow runners better run for cover, because General Armageddon is on the loose.”

Editor’s Note: Anyone who has followed the Russia-Ukraine war would have predicted that this attack on the Crimea bridge would lead to Russia retaliating in full force. Why did Ukraine do it then? What strategic advantage did they gain?

While Western media was characterizing the blast as “massive” and a “major blow for Putin”, the reality was that in just a couple of hours, the bridge was reopened to traffic. This meant that the blast was not as damaging as the mainstream media wants us to believe. There was no real reason to celebrate because whatever gains Ukraine garnered from this move, it was minimal and shortlived.

For sure, this development has boosted the morale of Ukraine supporters. But was it worth it, considering how Russia responded? If Ukraine thought that it could poke a sleeping bear without consequences, then they are truly delusional.

The Shock and Awe attack is proof that if Russia wanted to pummel Ukraine to the ground, then it would have been able to do so from the very beginning. The fact that Moscow is now taking out critical infrastructure means that they would have done the same earlier on if their initial goal was truly to unseat Zelensky just as Western media was saying. If Ukraine intended to minimize the damage of this war on its people, then it would consider a change in strategy, if not a regime change.

Even as we watch and sympathize with the citizens of Ukraine in their current dilemma, we must not forget that we have our own war to fight.
