In this December 23, 2020 article for the American Institute for Economic Research, author Ethan Yang explores how Singapore’s migrant worker reached herd immunity.
Migrant workers in Singapore typically live in crowded (and often unsanitary conditions). When COVID found its way in the dormitories, the Singaporean government placed these dormitories on quarantine, frequent testing, and increased medical staffing, while the rest of the country carried on its normal life with little restrictions.
The Singapore Ministry of Health reports that 93% of the country’s COVID cases came from these facilities and roughly 47% or a little over 152,000 of the total migrant workers population have tested positive for SARS-CoV-2. Despite the high infection rate, the clinical outcomes are less concerning. Of the 152,000 who contracted the virus, there were only two deaths and 25 admissions to the ICU. Considering only the migrant worker population, the infection fatality rate (IFR) of COVID is at .0013% and hospitalization rate of .016%.
Editor’s Note: Singapore’s experience provides us the proof of concept of the proposal put forward by The Great Barrington Declaration [read The Great Barrington Declaration: Life must return to normal for the healthy, the vulnerable must be protected]. It shows us that herd immunity can be achieved naturally, safely, and cost-effectively if we utilize decades-old knowledge about viruses.
Moreover, Singapore’s experience reminds us once again that the SARS-CoV-2 is not a deadly virus for young and healthy individuals. This is a well-documented fact that media seems to be ignoring. Coupled with researches pointing to the long-term immunity for SARS-CoV-2, the position put forward by The Great Barrington Declaration now makes sense. Exposing healthy, young people is not a careless move. It is in fact, the safest and most effective way of achieving herd immunity [Vaccines were also created to develop herd immunity. Unlike the natural approach, however vaccine injury is very real, and its adverse effects are debilitating, see Briefing document on Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine shows evidence of pathogenic priming among older adults and More than 5,000 people who received mRNA vaccine experienced adverse effects].
