In this December 23, 2020 article for the American Institute for Economic Research, author Ethan Yang explores how Singapore’s migrant worker reached herd immunity.

Migrant workers in Singapore typically live in crowded (and often unsanitary conditions). When COVID found its way in the dormitories, the Singaporean government placed these dormitories on quarantine, frequent testing, and increased medical staffing, while the rest of the country carried on its normal life with little restrictions.

The Singapore Ministry of Health reports that 93% of the country’s COVID cases came from these facilities and roughly 47% or a little over 152,000 of the total migrant workers population have tested positive for SARS-CoV-2. Despite the high infection rate, the clinical outcomes are less concerning. Of the 152,000 who contracted the virus, there were only two deaths and 25 admissions to the ICU. Considering only the migrant worker population, the infection fatality rate (IFR) of COVID is at .0013% and hospitalization rate of .016%.
