Is Sweden’s coronavirus response finally silencing the doubters?

0

In this article for The Telegraph, author Richard Orange reports that Sweden’s case rate has fallen below that of Denmark and Norway, registering 12 new cases per million compared to 18 for Denmark and 14 for Norway.

Meanwhile, COVID deaths in Sweden are averaging at two to three per day, down from over a hundred at the peak of the pandemic in mid-April. A test of 2,500 randomly selected individuals showed that no one had an active SARS-CoV-2 infection. Of this, Karin Tegmark Wisell says, “We interpret this as meaning there is not currently a widespread infection among people who do not have symptoms”.

In a television interview, Dr. Andrew Tegnell said that grandparents in Sweden should now be able to celebrate Christmas with their families.

Editor’s Note: Is Sweden winning against the coronavirus? If the basis for its success is its current data, then yes, we can say that indeed, Sweden has conquered SARS-CoV-2. And though some experts prefer to suspend judgement until after the flu season, Dr. Tegnell’s pronouncements is a validation of our earlier insight that natural immunity is still the best form of defense against any pathogen [also see Understanding the immune system of children may be the key to understanding susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 and Herd immunity may still be the key to fighting COVID-19].

Will Sweden’s success inspire other countries to finally lift lockdowns? It all depends on the purity of the governments’ intention and their willingness to accept their mistake. In the Philippines, the national pandemic response taskforce still has no real understanding of the disease, as evidenced by the scientifically-devoid policies they have been instituting as of late. In the United States, several politicians are still pushing for lockdowns and mandatory masking despite the evidence pointing to its dangers.

What is glaring these days, however, is the silence concerning Sweden’s success. Whereas the country was constantly in news in April and May, very few are now covering the current goings-on in Sweden. Could it be because the news coming from Sweden will prove that this pandemic has been mismanaged, not only by countries, but by the World Health Organization itself?
