Digital IDs: A Risk to Privacy Without Adequate Safeguards
The Biden administration is drafting an executive order to accelerate the adoption of digital IDs, including mobile driver’s licenses, potentially reshaping how Americans access government services and behave online. Experts warn that digital IDs while promising increased security, could lead to privacy concerns, increased surveillance, and reliance on Big Tech. Critics argue that these IDs could disproportionately impact vulnerable populations and might be a step toward implementing a central bank digital currency. Past breaches of similar systems in other countries highlight the risks of centralized digital identity programs.
Editor’s Note: The right to privacy is a fundamental concern that cannot be overlooked. Implementing a digital ID system, especially one involving biometric data, poses a significant threat to personal privacy, as it centralizes vast amounts of personal information, making it a prime target for hackers. Before we rush into this digitalization, the government must ensure they can protect this data. Without the necessary safeguards, the push for digital IDs could do more harm than good.
