World’s Drylands are Turning Green as CO2 Levels Rise: Alarmists Say Its Time to Panic

The Yale School of the Environment published the following article last July 16, 2024. In it, environmental journalist Fred Pearce discusses the unexpected greening phenomenon in the world’s drylands, which is occurring despite rising temperatures and increasing aridity due to climate change.

Research indicates that elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) levels enhance photosynthesis, allowing plants to grow more efficiently in these challenging environments. This greening is observed globally, from Australia to Africa and India, where vegetation is expanding rather than declining, contrary to previous predictions of desertification.

However, ecologists warn that this increased plant growth may have negative consequences, such as diminished water supplies and the potential loss of native species to invasive plants. While the greening effect may help mitigate some climate change impacts by capturing more carbon, it does not resolve the underlying challenges of hotter, drier conditions. It could lead to ecological imbalances in arid ecosystems.

Editor’s Note: This article confirms what previous studies have already found: the rise in CO2 is not the problem, and our current climate science is inaccurate [see Challenging the Climate Consensus: Debunking CO2’s Impact on Global Warming, New Study Challenges CO2’s Role in Global Warming, 2016 Study Found Carbon Dioxide Is Greening the Earth].

Now, the alarmists have decided, for whatever reason, that the greening of the earth is problematic because it could use up the scarce water for the people of the drylands. But didn’t the article say, “By allowing them to use scarce water more efficiently, the CO2-rich fertilizes vegetation growth”? So why are more plants an enemy now?

Perhaps it’s time for these climate alarmists to visit a forest so they can have a concrete experience of what a “green” earth means. Maybe then they will realize that if they only allowed nature to take its course, the earth could serve humans best if they flourish independently of human intervention. But then again, that isn’t profitable, so the alarmists can easily find a reason to invalidate what the true climate science is showing.
