DHS Unveils Digital ID Initiative
In this June 24, 2023 article for Reclaim the Net, Ken Macon discusses the new $1.7 million initiative launched by the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS). According to Macon, “The plan is to use the system for “travel, immigration, and citizenship status, employment, residency status and more.”
Editor’s Note: Governments will try to package Digital IDs as necessary for service delivery, but know this: creating digital systems is meant to create centralized standards that put privacy and personal data at risk. While digital wallets are “convenient”, we must remember how the Chinese government has utilized digital systems to “rank” their people, and effectively segregate society. Not only this, we must ask: who will have access to these digital pieces?
