In this September 27, 2022, article for NPR, Geoff Brumfiel and Rob Schmitz reports on two undersea leaks in the pipes of the Russian Nord Stream. According to Swedish and Danish seismographic data, these were likely caused by powerful underwater explosions.

Denmark prime minister Mette Frederiksen said that it is “hard to imagine” that the leaks were “accidental”.

Björn Lund, director of the Swedish National Seismic Network at Uppsala University said that there is no natural event that could have created the seismic signatures they have recorded. Instead, he says that the signatures closely resembled what they have detected in the past when the Swedish navy conducted depth charges and undersea mines.

If we study this situation closely, we will see that it is the US and NATO that stands to gain from the Nord Stream leaks. Consider this: both the US and NATO member countries are near implosion, thanks to their “unconditional” support for the war in Ukraine. Despite the billions of funding sent to Ukraine and the economic sanctions imposed on Russia by the West, Russia seems to be holding up well to the attacks [Read Ukraine is Losing the War, and So is Europe]. Could this be a last-ditch attempt to destabilize Russia? Or is this an attempt to escalate the war?

Apart from this, there are other circumstances supporting the claim that US and NATO are the more likely saboteurs. For one, the US has done this before. Second, recent reports show that US military helicopters have been habitually circling the site of the incident in the weeks before the Nord Steam sabotage. Second, US President Joe Biden has “promised” that his government will “bring an end” to Nord Stream 2 “if Russia invades”.

Third, on the same day that the leaks happened, leaders from Poland, Norway, and Denmark opened the new Baltic Pipe which transports natural gas from the Norwegian shelf, through the Baltic Sea to Poland. This is a new potential source of fuel in Europe which will end the “era of Russian domination in the field of gas”, according to Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. During the inauguration of the pipeline, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said, “We must do everything we can to eliminate energy as an instrument of Russian power. Together we will defeat Putin”.

Lastly, what is not being covered by mainstream media is that there have been some protests happening in Lubmin, Germany demanding the reopening of Nord Stream 2. This is obviously due to the rising energy costs in Germany and Europe which threatens to plunge the country into a “cold winter”. Could the sabotage have been to ensure that the pipes will never be opened again?

As this latest propaganda against Russia is backfiring on the US and NATO, they are now on the defense. Articles meant to “control” their damaged reputation are being released. For example, the New York Times has urged people to “exercise caution” because there is no evidence showing Russia was to blame for the sabotage. Meanwhile, the Guardian is saying that “little was at stake” in the Nord Stream blasts, in order to both clear Russia from blame while at the same time undermining the implications of this sabotage.
