In his first State of the Nation Address (SONA), Philippine President Bongbong Marcos highlighted the need to digitalize all government records and ordered government agencies to ensure that 92 million IDs are issued by mid-2023. According to Marcos, this push will enable Filipinos to “seamlessly transact with the government”. Aside from the digital IDs, Marcos wants “various inventories of data [to be] harmonized and shared across departments and agencies”.

Marcos goes on to talk about the need for the Philippines to “adapt to rapid technology innovation around the globe”. He goes on to say that “breakthrough technologies such as quantum computing, artificial intelligence, nanotech, internet of things, robotics, self-driving vehicles, 3D printing, virtual and augmented realities, among others will radically transform the way business is done”.

Marcos has also directed the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) to “deploy connectivity across the country”.

He wants government records and transactions digitalized, but since the Philippines is not developing its own “breakthrough technologies”, there is no doubt that we will only become users of technologies developed elsewhere. While he might not yet know this, Marcos is handling the Philippines’ data to companies that are controlled by other nations. In essence, he is enabling corporations and imperialistic countries the weapon that they can use against us.
