US will have herd immunity by April 2021

In this February 18, 2021 opinion article for the Wall Street Journal, surgeon and John Hopkins health policy expert Marty Makary says that the United States will have herd immunity by April 2021, which will allow life to return to normal. Makary points out the reality that cases have dropped by 77% in the past six weeks prior to the article’s publication. Makary goes on to discuss various evidences to support his claim, citing increasing natural infection as the main driver of the drop in cases. He also says that vaccines cannot explain the decrease in cases in January.

Towards the end of this article, Makary says the following: “Some medical experts privately agreed with my prediction that there may be very little COVID-19 by April but suggested that I not talk publicly about herd immunity because people might become complacent and fail to take precautions or might decline the vaccine. But scientists shouldn’t try to manipulate the public by hiding the truth”.
