CDC updates planning scenarios, shows IFR lower than flu

A September 10, 2020 update of the CDC planning scenarios shows that the infection fatality ratio (IFR) for COVID-19 is lower than that of flu. Summarized in the table below is the IFR and survival rate of COVID-19 patients categorized according to age.

Age of PatientsInfection Fatality Ratio (IFR)Survival Rate
0-19 years0.0000399.997%
20-49 years0.000299.98%
50-69 years0.00599.5%
70+ years0.05494.6%

Editor’s Note: Earlier comparisons of SARS-CoV-2 and influenza estimated that the novel coronavirus was deadlier, with the lower end IFR estimates somewhere around 0.2% to 0.3% compared to 0.04% of seasonal influenza.

More than six months since the World Health Organization (WHO) declared SARS-CoV-2 a pandemic, we are seeing that even the modest estimates are over valued.
