He says that this was also how past populist efforts, such as the Populist Party of the 1890s, often fell short of their ambitious goals due to entrenched political structures and a lack of coherent policy agendas. Malone expresses concern over recent appointments within the Trump administration’s HHS transition team, suggesting they reflect a compromise with mainstream interests rather than a commitment to “medical freedom.”
