Malaysia and Indonesia Heighten Mpox Measures Amid Global Health Alert

Malaysia is enhancing its surveillance and advocacy efforts for mpox after the WHO declared a global public health emergency for the second time. Travelers from countries with mpox cases must monitor their health for 21 days upon entering Malaysia. The Health Ministry advises those with risky activities or symptoms to seek immediate medical attention and avoid contact to prevent virus spread. In Indonesia, foreign visitors must declare their health status and travel history, and those with illnesses are advised to avoid continuing their trip.

Editor’s Note: Just as the COVID-19 pandemic had far-reaching consequences, affecting economies, mental health, and daily life, the current focus on mpox could similarly disrupt lives and economies if not managed thoughtfully. We in the Philippines have experienced significant challenges because of COVID-19. The government should ensure that responses are balanced with consideration for long-term impacts on their citizens.
