Fauci: Safe and effective vaccine could be ready by end of November

Dr. Anthony Fauci, senior advisor to US president Donald Trump and directory of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID) confirms Trump’s claim that a safe and effective vaccine could be ready by end of November.

Fauci’s pronouncement comes after it was revealed that the UK government has introduced new laws that will allow it to bypass the EU approval process of vaccine safety.

Editor’s Note: There are two things that stands out from this article. First, how can Fauci be so sure that a safe and effective vaccine can be ready by November when at least two vaccine trials have had to stop in the US due to adverse effects? [Read Johnson & Johnson halts coronavirus vaccine clinical trial after “adverse event” participant and AstraZeneca pauses clinical trials due to safety issue. The issues about the Moderna vaccine have also surfaced in the past, see A touted COVID-19 vaccine has already harmed people].

Second, we will remember that Fauci himself said that a vaccine will not eradicate the coronavirus [See Dr. Anthony Fauci: You cannot eradicate the coronavirus]. Moreover, a recent article written by Dr. Peter Doshi and Dr. Eric Topol shows that trials were not designed to measure whether the vaccines could prevent serious complications and deaths particularly among at-risk populations [read COVID-19 vaccine trials will not tell us if it can prevent moderate or severe cases]. For purpose then, does the vaccine serve, and why are governments willing to circumvent decades-old vaccine safety measures?
