Meta announced a significant overhaul of its content moderation policies, including the termination of its third-party fact-checking program in the U.S.

In a five-minute video released last January 7, 2025, CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated that the company would replace fact-checkers with a community-driven system similar to X’s Community Notes, arguing that previous measures had been politically biased and detrimental to trust. This shift aims to “get back to [their] roots around free expression on Facebook and Instagram”. Zuckerberg also said that the company will shift from content moderation to “tackling illegal and high severity violations”. Zuckerberg also said that US-based content review teams will be moved to Texas where “there’s less concern about the bias” of their teams.

Zuckerberg ends his video by admitting that the previous US administration “pushed for censorship” which has “emboldened other governments to go even further”.
