How AI and Biased Imagery Shape Our Perceptions Without Us Knowing

CCH Research Team, November 7, 2024November 7, 2024

Our perceptions are greatly impacted by the pictures we see on social media and the internet daily, which frequently serve to reinforce prejudices and preconceptions, particularly those related to gender roles in the workplace. According to studies, search engines and platforms with a lot of images, such as Google and AI-generated material, frequently reflect and reinforce societal biases, which might gently influence users’ implicit opinions. AI models are also impacted by the cycle of biased imagery, which makes it challenging to depart from deeply ingrained stereotypes. Although tech corporations are somewhat to blame, people can mitigate these effects by limiting screen time and selecting diverse information. Navigating the visually dense digital world of today requires an awareness of these factors.

Editor’s Note: AI systems are now predominantly controlled by corporations, which means that the information we view is frequently filtered through the interests of those who own the technology. If organizations, or even people with questionable objectives, decide to influence the data models to ingest or promote, they will have an immense impact on world narratives. This could gently influence public opinion, perceptions, and even societal norms, all without users being aware of the manipulation.

One important thing to consider is that AI and algorithms do not represent humans. They analyze data and respond based on patterns rather than judgment, ethics, or empathy. They can amplify prejudices and preconceptions simply because they “learn” from biased data that exists in society.
