Russian Troops Accused of Executing Surrendered Ukrainian Soldiers, Violating International Law
CNN discovered video footage showing Russian troops executing surrendered Ukrainian soldiers as part of a developing pattern of alleged war crimes. Ukrainian authorities have investigated at least 28 similar events since the beginning of the war, with Ukrainian defense intelligence claiming 15 cases supported by drone video or audio recordings. Prosecutors argue that these executions are part of a Kremlin-directed program, potentially raising them to crimes against humanity. The systematic nature of these executions poses a difficulty to Ukrainian leaders, as exposing them risks further depressing already exhausted forces.
Editor’s Note: The recent evidence of Russian troops executing surrendering Ukrainian soldiers highlights a heinous disregard for international law and human rights. Under the Geneva Conventions, soldiers who surrender and lay down their arms are entitled to protection and must not be harmed. [Article 3 Section 1 states that: Persons taking no active part in the hostilities, including members of armed forces who have laid down their arms and those placed hors de combat by sickness, wounds, detention, or any other cause, shall in all circumstances be treated humanely, without any adverse distinction founded on race, color, religion or faith, sex, birth or wealth, or any other similar criteria.]
The videos obtained by CNN reveal disturbing evidence of Russian forces violating these basic principles, showcasing war crimes that go against humane warfare. These extrajudicial killings not only violate the rights of these soldiers but also strip away the dignity of the battlefield, where surrender should guarantee life, not execution. It is the responsibility of the powerful to act with humanity and compassion since there is no excuse for violence, which only deepens division. If Russia seeks to gain moral ascendancy over the West, it must not resort to the same tactics it criticizes.
However, there is also solid evidence, as shown in this Newsweek article based on a confirmed New York Times story, that Ukrainians have also engaged in the unacceptable practice of executing Russian POWs.
In the battle for hearts and minds, both Russia and Ukraine have to refrain from violations of international law. The ongoing war, in itself, is already taking a terrible toll on the lives of both countries. There is absolutely no need to turn to barbaric practices to win the war. What is the point of a victory when the victor loses its humanity.
