French Politicians Using Potential Terror Threats To Push For Mass Facial Recognition Rollout
Laurent Wauquiez, president of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region and affiliated with the Les Républicains (LR), has called for legislative amendments to enable schools to use of facial recognition technology. He says that the proposal will beef up security in educational institutions and would help prevent incidents like the Arras tragedy where a teacher was killed by a former student.
Wauquiez’s proposal has garnered mixed reactions, but he asserts that legislative changes are the prerogative of elected officials.
Editor’s Note: Wauqiez is the epitome of the politician who forgets that their authority is bestowed upon them by citizens. There are many like him in the Philippines – those who push for authoritarian solutions (for example, SB1869) instead of listening to their people and exploring creative solutions.
This is the reason why we, citizens, must become vigilant. We must remember that power resides in the people, and that politicians cannot just do what they want to do without consequence.
