The Urgent Need for Peace in the Shadow of Nuclear Threats

Russian President Vladimir Putin is said to have ordered the deployment of RS-28 Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missiles, nicknamed “Satan II,” in reaction to Ukraine’s use of US and UK-supplied weapons. The RS-28, which is capable of transporting nuclear weapons over great distances, raises worries amid rising tensions in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. This follows a recent missile test failure and rising worries of nuclear escalation, with Western media speculating about possible US nuclear aid to Ukraine. Russia has strongly denounced these claims, warning of catastrophic consequences if nuclear weapons are used in the battle.

Editor’s Note: Nuclear warfare is more than simply a military strategy; it is a catastrophic risk to millions of civilian lives and the planet’s future. History and science demonstrate the deadly immediate impact of nuclear weapons, as well as their long-term impacts on health, the environment, and global stability. The introduction of such weapons into the battle risks normalizing their usage, potentially prompting other governments or groups to follow suit. The only possible path forward is to prioritize peace discussions and diplomacy; human life and civilization’s future are too valuable to risk a downward spiral of bloodshed.
